Combining the Unusual and Familiar in RPG Games

If you’ve been following my latest articles you know how much I emphasize creative role playing. One of the best ways to achieve creativity is forcing your player characters to experience the unusual with the familiar. Take for instance the juxtaposition of Harry Potter with rpg gaming. Very unusual to be sure! Read the following to your players before they begin gaming:

Draco timidly measured just the right amount of flour, trying to keep a low profile. To make things worse Snape glided over to them, and Draco just knew he was frowning his hook nose down at him from behind his back. Now Draco was determined to NOT make a mistake. He gulped and carefully shifted the flour in and the baking soda, and he could hear Snape tsk tsking to himself. Draco’s whole arm shook now, he was terrified!

“Alright class, now add in the eggs.” Professor McGonagal spoke up. Draco timidly grabbed two eggs, and cracked them each into the bowl of ingredients. But on the last egg, he was too busy worrying about Snape, and he crushed it between his hands, getting egg shells in the batter!!! The egg shells glistened like a handful of opalescent dnd dice.

Snape glowered, furious. What was Draco’s problem? Couldn’t he even crack an egg right?! Before he could yell at Draco for being so careless, everything stopped when the twins began juggling eggs.

“Hey, look at us!” George said, and he and Fred made a grand show.

Draco shut his eyes, memories coming back. He could remember when his mom and dad took him to the circus at Chessex Crossing, his mother bought him as many balloons he could carry and they ate all of the pie they wanted…he remembered his father, Lucius dressing as a clown and surprising them. Those were the days…

“TEN POINTS FROM GRYFFINDOR.” Snape suddenly yelled, and Draco came back to reality.

“Aww…” Fred said, disappointed. George was so surprised he dropped both eggs on the floor! Snape turned sharply, his cloak billowing behind him.

“Clean it up, Draco,” he said icily.

Draco stared in horror, “Why me??”

Snape glared. “Don’t ask questions. Just DO IT.” He said threateningly, moving over to go yell at Neville.
